Amity

The hospital was all white, clean and sparkling. From floor to the ceilings this place was gleaming like the sun, and it made Remi smile. But it also made her sad, though only just a bit. She missed Amity; the wide open fields, full of wheat and straw. Orchards full of apples and pears and plums, and other succulent fruit that made her mouth water. The fruit cup she had on her lunch tray was nothing compared to the fruit that grew in Amity. Remi could close her eyes and recall the many days she’d spent running around in those fields with Dara and Bay, and all the other kids. All the skinned knees, muddy feet, dirty cheeks. All the shouts to climb just a little bit higher, to the treetop, and the breathless feeling when she got to the top and saw her house, and everyone else’s. Back when she was close to her siblings, back when they were all just kids and didn’t even think about which faction they’d be in when they grew up. A small sigh escaped her lipstick pink lips and she poked her fork at a particularly unappetizing piece of pineapple. Or… At least it looked like a pineapple.

Her usual chipper demeanor was a little off, though she supposed it was from working for so long. Being a Physician’s Assistant was great, the greatest job ever. She loved it, really. But her day had been pretty taxing, and she really wanted nothing better to be back in own bed, snuggled beneath the sheets, window cracked so she was able to hear the crickets chirping; a favorite sound of hers. Call Remi childish, but she loved being able to hear all the animals skittering about in the darkness. It comforted her, made the nights a little less lonely. Overall, she was very happy. Remi had a great job, a great home settled onto the perfect bit of land, her health, her looks, a surplus of food and wealth, and yet… There was this little twinge of pain in her heart. Like a thorn in her side, she’d make a quick movement and it would suddenly hurt again, and no matter how deeply she tried to dig it out, that part of her was just inaccessible. There was an empty spot in her heart, one that she wasn’t sure how to fix.

A pinched look appeared on her face as she put one of the pieces of pineapple in her mouth and it was unexpectedly sour. “Blech!” Remi shook her head, grabbing her water and taking a large sip of it. So, this meal of fruit in a cup wasn’t one she’d happily repeat. Sighing again, she stood, picking up her garbage and tossing it away before letting her shoulders drop a bit. She had an hour until she needed to start seeing patients again, and going to bother one of the doctors was not an option. They were busy, she was busy. She understood. But sitting somewhere in a room, rereading and re-rereading charts wasn’t really appealing to her at the moment. Remi pondered going outside and for a walk, but it was dark, and she wasn’t entirely familiar with the area. Getting lost wasn’t what she needed right now, especially so close to the end of a shift. Her heels clicked on the hard linoleum floor as she turned and started back towards the locker room, figuring she’d at least go hang out there for a while. Or maybe the staff lounge.

A brilliantly bright smile appeared on her face when she saw the familiar, quick-paced figure of Aimee walk by her. Remi turned and called after her, “Aimee, wait up!” Hurrying to catch up with her, she wondered briefly if the psychiatrist was on her break too. Or why she was here even? Wasn’t it late for a psychiatrist to be here? She wouldn’t ask though, it wasn’t really any of her business. And she figured that patients needed help when they needed help, the hours of the day didn’t matter to them. “Uhm,” she blurted out before being able to even compose a thought. “Are you on a break? Do you want to grab some coffee? Maybe at that café across the street? The stuff here sucks!”

It was a lovely day. Aimee was busy today at the hospital with her clients and research but today was enjoyable for her. It was busier than normal but Aimee was on a roll. She just recently had an intense meeting with a client. Some days after those appointments, it made Aimee even more determined to work hard so that she could help these people who were willingly wanting to address their problems with her. Honestly, listening to all of her clients ade her life so boring. Everyday she would get up, eat and go to work. Aimee was so busy all the time that she would never meet up with friends and take time for herself. It didn’t bother her though; work drove her to be a better person and it was something to keep her mind off of everything else that was concerning to her.

She had just finished her morning appointments with her clients and turned her attention to more of her research. Aimee didn’t know which she liked better. There were some days when she didn’t feel like engaging in a conversation so when clients would come in for their scheduled appointments she really would have to find something deep down to find and enthusiasm and support towards those clients. She felt like it was appropriate for her, because she needed those challenges to help her continuously be interested in her job. When Aimee was in need of discovering new aspects of the human brain, research was awe-inspiring. It seemed like Aimee knew already so much but when she would get deeper in research she would always find something she never knew about. She would always take a break after her morning stretch of clients. She found it calming as well, practicing her listening skills. She felt like besides being someone who gave advice she was mostly there for someone to have listen to whatever they might have to say.

It was lunch time and ate her food from which she brought from home. It was a simple meal but Aimee was a light eater to begin with. After lunch, she went back to work. By the end of the day she would get more and more run down. Looking down at papers for a long time was tiring to her eyes but she never complained. She was used to it by now. Today, Aimee’s agenda consisted of all client appointments. She rarely had those days so when she saw them in her schedule she always looked forward to it.

As she finished her last client of the day it was pretty late in the day. She was hungry and was technically done with her work day if she didn’t want to tag some research on at the end. She decided that since she had a pretty exhausting day she would give herself a little break. She finished everything up in the office and went to the staff room. She grabbed a cup of coffee but had one sip and threw it away. She was eyeing some of the food but it didn’t look too appetizing. Out of the blue, she looked to her side and saw Remi next to her. She was a physician’s assistant and didn’t see her often but they were friends being that they were both at the hospital. She heard Remi’s proposal and definitely agreed. She responded, "Yes I am actually on break, just got finished for the day. Going to the café sounds great, I was thinking of getting a cake. That sounds really good right now. How's work for you Remi?”as Aimee smiled back at her.

Remi felt like she could barely deal with her own problems, though that wasn’t true if she stepped back and evaluated her life. She was young, successful, and happy. Her house was bigger than the house she’d grown up in, settled onto a large plot of land in the middle of a beautiful valley. Nature was literally all around her. She had a barn, and even though it was empty, she was sure someday she’d own horses and cattle and dogs and cats and whatever animals she wanted. Her life was really great, there was no denying that. And even though she was perfectly willing and able to deal with herself and all her dumb, doubtful thoughts, imagining giving someone else life altering instructions terrified her. Maybe it was because she wasn’t Erudite, though she was still in the medical field. Either way, the mind was something that confused her. It always had, and she guessed it always would.

And here Aimee was, dissecting it. Not literally. But, just, helping people, knowing how the mind worked. She was so smart and so pretty and brilliant and Remi just adored her and wanted to hug her and paint her nails and feed her peace bread and have her be happy. A crimson blush crawled down her cheeks and onto her neck as she realized that Aimee was speaking, talking to her, and she was totally lost in her own thoughts. Though, it quickly disappeared when the other woman agreed to go to the café with her. “Great! There’s that place down the street, you know, right on the corner? Wanna go there?” The thing about Amity was that you could be kind, selfless, like Abnegation, except you could lie. You could do whatever it took to keep the peace. Being able to look at yourself in the mirror, that was a pleasure Remi gladly.

She loved stepping out of the shower and placing her hands on the cool wooden frame of the big mirror in her room, the way it’s surface felt as she slid her fingers across it’s smooth edges. The way of mirror fogged up with the steamy air from the shower, the way it felt to wipe that fog away. Like little dew drops sticking to your fingers. Remi liked the way she looked naked. But no, it wasn’t a selfish thing, it was a beauty thing. She liked the way everyone look naked. So vulnerable, so open, and raw, it was not something to be ashamed of. She joked, often, that if she could walk naked everywhere, she would. Her tanned skin, her high cheek bones and angular nose, deep, wide eyes, and her blonde hair that cascaded down her shoulders; Remi like to look in the mirror.

“A cake?” Her thoughts were ripped away from images of herself, and back over to her friend. Grabbing Aimee’s arm, Remi hooked her arm through the other woman’s and smiled. “That is a brilliant idea! They have the best pastries over there! Freshly made, too.” She laughed a bit, glancing over at her friend, a jovial look in her eyes. Though Remi was only a few inches taller than Aimee, but in heels she was a fair amount taller than her. At the question of how work was going for her, she smiled brightly. “Work is great! I get to travel all over all of the factions. I was just in Dauntless last week, and I’ll be there again next week. That’s keeping me pretty busy.” A small smile etched itself into her skin, and she shook her head. “No, but no work talk right now. You’ve got to tell me all the juice on your life! Any new friends?” She winked, implying something else and started them off towards the exit.

Remi had always had a certain way of her that always made Aimee feel suddenly rejuvenated. It must have been her energy or they way Amity just were. In any case, she was just the person to cheer Aimee up from her usual hard-working reserved self. Aimee lived too much in her own shell and definitely could benefit from more time in the outside world. Of course, she herself would never admit that because she only had her work to really keep her company. Certainly she had Remi and others but her effort in meeting with her few friends was lacking. Even socializing at work was rare for Aimee; she rarely would engage in conversation with her psychologist partners. She just assumed that they all had better things to do than to converse with her that she would just nod as she passed by. Aimee was attempting to remember how she and Remi had become so close. Aimee wasn’t the easiest person to get to know, but Remi must had been the magical touch for them to be close friends.

They were both so busy, so when Remi had approached her in the staff room in the hospital she was more than happy to catch up on life and other important aspects of their lives. Aimee always wished that something exciting was happening in her life but that was partially her doing, for she never went out in the first place. Aimee could never quite get herself to admit that it was her feeling the boring schedule in her life. All of this was easier said than done, being that she was shy in the first place and to approach complete strangers, well that takes a ton of confidence that Aimee doesn't have.

Remi had agreed to go to the café near by with her. Aimee was relieved that she was leaving the hospital, this was practically her home, not that she wanted it to be. She would normally get to work in the early morning and then stay fairly into the afternoon. Aimee didn’t has as many clients and she didn’t feel like returning to her research so she decided to let it go for just one day and give herself a break. She thought why not, but even as she left she began contemplating.. Aimee was way too hard one herself and definitely deserved this break for herself. Aimee just accepted the fact that she deserved a little break and that it was no big deal. She replied to Remi happily, “That sounds like a great idea!” Honestly, just making conversation with someone she hadn’t seen in a while was all she needed to truly get herself excited. It seemed silly that she would be so enthused about getting away from her work , but Aimee was often alone diligently working, so this was very much an occasion for her.

Aimee honestly looked at Remi and just admired her. She was so outgoing, gorgeous and incredibly easy to talk to. She was smiling back at Remi relieved that she wasn’t judging her. Remi had took Aimee’s elbow and interlocked them with hers. Aimee was listening and replied, “That sounds interesting. I mean, at least you get to go to the other factions. That must be really interesting.” Aimee could have continued on that conversation but of course Remi quickly changed the topic. Aimee replied while blushing, “Other than work? I wish, I get caught up in all of the things I have to do, I don’t have anytime really for friends… That must sound depressing, but really it isn’t.” Aimee regretted telling the truth, she just sounded like a busy workaholic with no life. Aimee was even more embarrassed now, but truly she had no other way to answer Remi’s question. Aimee added in a regretful tone, “And I certainly don’t have anytime for some fling.” They continued through the halls as they slowly approached the café across the street.

Amity

Being busy usually wasn’t something Remi liked, or at least she thought she didn’t like. Though that statement was a very obvious contradiction, looking at her busy schedule. She loved being busy, and the more exhausted she was at the end of the day the better she felt about her accomplishments. Though, in the moment she often felt like she needed to just take a seat on the ground and maybe just nap there for like five or so hours. Helping people was what she strived for, like most Amity members. Though, she always joked that the difference between Amity and Abnegation was that Amity members were allowed to be selfish. They were allowed to be mean, and lie. And boy, did Remi appreciate that. Patients would sometimes ask her if their gnarly wound looked too bad, and she’d lie through her pearly white teeth and say that they looked fine. Meanwhile she’d be darting off to get someone to sew them up a lot better than she could. Though she practiced meticulously, suturing oranges and plums and all sorts of things that grew in surplus in the Amity orchards, Remi still doubted her skills.

Maybe she’d be a doctor someday, but today was not that day. Tomorrow wasn’t looking so good either. Luckily, Aimee appeared like a Godsend, the perfect distraction for this day. When her friend spoke, the tall blonde listened attentively. She was more than happy to stay quiet, though that was never really the case. Usually Aimee wasn’t a big talker, even though she was better around Remi than she was around strangers. And Remi wished she could take her friend and force her into being social, though that wouldn’t really help anything. There were so many things Remi loved about her psychologist friend that she wished everyone could see. But, she felt lucky to know the other woman’s secrets. Especially since Aimee was pretty soft spoken. Remi’s life was spent working 50% and doing pleasurable things the other 50%. It was an Amity thing. Something that she had no problem trying to slyly shove onto other people. Her motto problem was something like ‘do whatever makes you the most happy and helps the most people’.

When Aimee said that going to the café sounded like a great idea, Remi couldn’t help but clasp her hands together excitedly. “Great!” She purred out, smiling luminously to her friend. She looked nothing less than ecstatic. As they started walking through the hospital, she could barely stop herself from gushing. “You wouldn’t believe it, Aimee. Dauntless is so… Just…” She thought about Ariel, and almost rolled her eyes in annoyance. “It’s so different. Scary, in a way. All these pierced, tattooed people wandering around in all black, looking at you like you’ve just insulted them beyond forgiveness.” Looking down at her own tattooed arm, a slight smirk appeared on her lips. “Though, I guess I’m no better.” She laughed softly and turned the corner, then headed out the exit, and was on the street with Aimee. The café was a block away, she could see its bright blue sign from where they were right now.

“Aimee,” her tone became soft, and her eyes gentle. Remi stopped walking, holding the other woman back with her. “That is sad. That’s really sad.” Her tone was a little serious. “You deserve fun, a lot more fun.” She pursed her lips in a concerned, motherly way. “I want you to be happy, and you don’t sound happy right now.” Maybe she was being too honest, too blunt, but Remi didn’t care. “Just, remember that you can have fun on your own. You don’t have to go out and be in a huge crowd, just stay at home and… Paint, or something.” She felt guilty, not really knowing what Aimee’s hobbies were. Remi decided that she had been a really shitty friend. “Come stay with me sometime, we can take a mini vacation and just lay in bed and drink wine and you can ride horses bareback and we can go skinny dipping.” There was a definite teasing in her tone, and she started walking again, content on saying that. “We’ll just have to find you a fling then, pre-plan it out and everything.” She hummed, turning to wink at Aimee.

Aimee was lucky to have Remi as a close friend. Remi could always let Aimee be more adventurous and excitable, since her job never really allowed that or would she let herself feel that as well. Aimee cherished the friendship she had because it had been a long time since she had ever someone who was close to her. In Dauntless she never connected, and replied, “Wow, my life in Dauntless seems so long ago, but it really hasn’t been. Weird.” She looked down as they continued walking to the shop. She added, “I guess I know why I never connected with that faction, but I don’t have any bad feeling towards them though. Sometimes I really do miss Dauntless, only if I could have fit in.” Aimee forced a smile to Remi, she didn’t know why she wanted to talk about that. Good thing they were already on the subject of friends, which was still a topic she didn’t have much to say about either.

It was a strange thing. Aimee rarely even thought about her previous life in Duantless. Mostly when that occurred in her head she was mostly thinking about her parents. She really missed them but she was in a new part of her life, she needed to start over, and that is exactly what she has been doing. Aimee built her new life in Erudite and has become quite successful in her eyes. Only being about more than two years out of initiation and already with a solid job, Aimee never gave herself enough credit. Working hard in initiation payed off , and never rewarded herself enough. AImee was too hardworking to a point where fun was never something she would think about. Aimee was determined to be her best and always perform at her highest. If there was an issue with her clients or with her research she will persevere through it and not stop until she has fully solved the issue.

Talking about anything other than work now was what she needed regardless of the subject. Remi was good at making Aimee talk about what wasn’t necessarily always on her mind. She was the type of person to get all of the busy stuff out of Aimee’s head. They are both complete opposites which both benefit from and have a wonderful relationship where they really compliment each other. She had forgotten where they had met, most likely ran into each other in the hospital one day, but she was really lucky that the two had met. Come to think of it, that was the only real friend she had. Aimee would always try and never develop a friendship with her clients outside of their appointments and she never bothered with finding friends either.

Listening to Remi at that moment, all Aimee was thinking was she was completely right. Aimee didn’t go out and have fun enough. She was definitely going to learn a lot through this friendship. At least she hoped she would. Aimee replied, “No you're so right, I need to have fun more often, we need to hang out some more. Honestly, I wouldn’t even mind you finding someone for me.” Aimee laughed, as she couldn’t believe she had just offered Remi to set her up with someone, but that was probably what she needed. Remi’s life just seemed so much more exciting than hers, but Remi allowed herself to have fun, when Aimee never did that to herself. Taking this time off was really what she needed.

They finally got to the cafe, and Aimee ordered that slice of cake she had mentioned. It was a beautiful chocolate pavé cake. She had been craving that ever since Remi mentioned going to the cafe across the way. She took a bit and was in heaven and offered a piece to Remi, “Have some if you would like, please!” There was silence for sometime but it was nice to just be with someone who she felt comfortable with.“By the way, who would you set me up with anyway?”Alright, Aimee was slightly curious.
